UMC Profile History 1898-

In 1898, our company was founded as the Uchiyama Cork-Stopper Fac-tory and began production of cork stoppers. Since then, it has developed a great many cork products and has grown into a top manufacturer in the cork industry. During this period, synthetic rubber and systhetic resin production divisions were added and presently gaskets and sealing ma-terials for cars and industrial machines are our mainstay.
In 1956, our company was reorganized into a corporation, and at present, gaskets and sealing materials, food sealing materials, heat insulators and packages are being produced at seven plants. Upholding our motto, "Contributing to society by providing products that benefit both the cus-tomer and lifestyles" and focusing on technical improvements and new product development, we have entered into new fields one after an-other, in an effort to continually grasp customer needs and market trends. With its 26 plants,1 technical center and 21 branches staffed with engineers, UCHIYAMA Group has the facilities to continue its leap forward in research and development using its excellent technical exper-tise to advance cutting-edge technologies.

1898	The late Mr.Shintaro Uchiyama established Uchiyama Cork-Stopper Factory in Sayo, Hyogo Prefecture.
1901	Moved the plant to Atetsu-gun, Okayama Prefecture.
1903	Moved the plant to Hiba-gun, Hiroshima Prefecture.
1918	Built a plant in Kadota, Okayama City for granulated cork production.
1927	Changed the name to Uchiyama Cork Kogyosho.
1930	Developed the first oil-proof composition cork sheet in Japan, and started manufac-turing cork-disk and gaskets.
1933	Built a plant in Enami, Okayama City, and started manufacturing insulation cork board.
1937	Built a plant, and started manufacturing composition cork board.
1938	Authorized by the Ministry of Railroads to manufacture corkboard.
1940	Authorized by the Imperial Armed Forces to manufacture insulation corkboard and com-position corkboard.
1944	Established Toyo Cork, Ltd.
